Grilled Octopus Salad
Straight from the sea, pounded, marinated, grilled octopus tossed with fresh red onions and capers
We were a group sitting at 2 tables.
Feedback from our group:
Delicious food, service was outstanding!
Thank you for accommodating our group!
We will be back!
The worst waitress ever. Rude and everything took forever as she only came to the table about every 25 minutes. Truly the worst experience at a restaurant with great food.
Black Olive has always been one of our favorite special restaurants, especially for the fresh fish. One of the true sins is to overcook fish. The waiter should have taken less time with trying to impress us with his knowledge and more with paying attention to the service.
The appetizers were delicious, but we waited more than 45 minutes for our fish entrees. The waiter blamed this on a large party in another room and told us our food was on the warming table. This was obvious when we finally received it, because one of our party said her haddock was overcooked to the point of having a crust on it and did not finish it.
It may be a problem of understaffing because of starting full inside dining after COVID, but dinner starting at 6:45 should not take almost 3 hours. We will not return or recommend to our friends until the service is fixed.
A delightful evening on a quaint side street in Fells Point. The hostess showed us to our choice of a quieter table on the back deck (though plentiful outdoor seating out front allows for more social dining). As always, Black Olive offers a wide selection of fresh seafood and an extensive menu of appetizers to choose from (along with adult beverages of course). In our case, we started off with Prosecco, warm Sourdough Bread, the Melitzanasalata Eggplant spread and the grilled Jumbo Scallops. Yuummm!
I then asked our server for her suggestion for an entree - which turned out to be the best-tasting Mediterranean Sea Bass I've ever had, grilled & prepared to absolute perfection! What a wonderful treat! And the slow-cooked Moroccan Style Braised Lamb Shank! a huge bowl of stew, filled to the brim served over couscous - flavorful and also cooked to perfection, the tender meat fall-off-the-bone delicious.
Wine and Baklava followed as the perfect way to finish the evening. So after four-and-a-half happy hours we slowly made our way back to the (now) night sky of Fells Point.
Dear 9DHC, Thank you for your review. We greatly appreciate even negative reviews as they are a teaching moment. Your review, is however, a real treat for a staff that has been working hard during and after a pandemic to maintain a cuisine that has been passed down through oral culture. Your words make such respectful recognition of the effort that our entire team makes to give genuine love through the craft of food. We are so happy that you enjoyed your experience! Kind Regards, Dimitris
Nice evening, didn't sit in the primo area of the place but the food carried the evening.
Excellently prepared seafood. Scallops were particularly outstanding but we enjoyed all of the other dishes that we ordered (octopus salad, eggplant, dover sole, and tiramisu).
Every time we go to the Black Olive, we find another reason to fall in love with this place. The food is delicious. Wine, beer, cocktails: they always have a list of classics with a twist and local offerings we haven’t tried. The service and hospitality are second to none. The owner, Dimitri, visits each table to inquire about your meal and to see if your martini was made the way you like it. It’s different than other spots in Fell’s Point in that it’s classy and cozy at the same time. You can share small plates with a group or enjoy a beautiful entree, from Moroccan lamb shank to a whole Bronzino. We went for our wedding anniversary this weekend and can’t wait to go back.
Black Olive has an excellent menu and the food is fantastic. Great combination of Greek, with all of the traditional item, and seafood with a modern touch. Drink menu is excellent as well. We were a group of 10 and ou server was ovewhelmed from the start and was probably not that experienced which resulted in some bad moments for service (4 appetizers never delivered, incorrect drink orders prepared and extremely slow service which resulted in 1 member having to leave before his meal was ready.) However, the manager/owner overwhelmed us with his apology and his actions to "make it right". Once we brought our disastissfaction with the service to his attention he made sure that he was checking in with us, ensuring the orders were correct and actually thank me for letting him know about the issue and even said he was going to make sure stay started lettingcusotmer know that some entrees took up to 45 minutes to prepare and that they should account for that. Overall an excellent experience at the end and I will be going back.
Food was great, lots of different fresh fish to choose from as well as chicken and beef dishes. Have the hummus-it’s fantastic!
Jayk, Thank You for your kind words! The Black Olive Family
The Black Olive was as fantastic as always! The food, ambiance and service were all excellent. This restaurant never disappoints. It is equally great for a special occasion or for no occasion. We love their fresh fish, homemade bread and various dips. They are attentive and the food presentation is beautiful!
Dear Bostonbon, Thank you! That made us all smile! The Black Olive Family
First time back since covid. The back deck was peaceful and the food was perfectly cooked and fresh. Casual, not rushed and a delightful experience. One of the owners was there and checked and regularly. Glad they survived the shutdowns and hope to return soon.
The wine selection was limited. They didn't have the Cab we ordered. The waitress had no training on wines and offered a white wine as a replacement. We ordered a Pinot Noir, which was overpriced (we both had a headache the next day). When we ordered the food, they only had one side available, a fennel apple salad. When asked if they had veggies, the chef said he wasn't making anything else. At that point, we paid for the hummus (which was delicious) and wine and left.
To whomever responded to my review, your bias is showing. Guessing you said I had an attitude because I'm a black woman. FYI, I never spoke to the server, my date did. Being he's a very kind, diplomatic attorney, he was never nasty. We don't believe in being nasty to servers. Your lack of curiosity and sides have no bearing on her service. Saying your wine gave us a headache is a fact and therefore not slander. Treat the next bad review with more respect. Read it and do better, not attack the person who didn't enjoy the experience.
Dear Miss M, Normally, we look at reviews that have things that we can improve and take them seriously. . It is slanderous to say that you got a headache from the Pinot noir that you had. We are a busy restaurant and the chef makes thoughtful sides every night. We offered other options but cannot grill vegetables on a grill that is full and is timing very complicated seafood and fish. Your nasty tone and inability to understand anything that a restaurant must face during a pandemic is shameful!
Great people/staff, delicious food and wonderful atmosphere! I recommend The Black Olive...two thumbs up!
Excellent service and delicious well prepared food! Loved quaint and intimate vibe... Perfect for first date scenario!
Thank you Darnel!
We asked for pita bread multiple times and was given excuses every single time (we saw the other table get it and it was supposed to come with our hummus appetizer ... so we had to eat it with regular bread which Was a little weird). Prices are expensive but food was good.
Dear Cris, I am sorry that we ran out of our house made pita. It took us a little while to get up to speed with everything and have been doing our best to have everything in abundance. I also apologize for the prices being what they are. We keep impeccable quality of seafood and ingredients that have, especially recently, experienced significant increases in cost to us. Again thanks for your feedback and sorry again about the pita. Kind Regards, Dimitris
Food was generally good, however we have ordered grilled fish but they had only one side (cus cous). We have asked for an alternative, eg. Some veggies or other but they have refused it. Simple request, which they would be able to do it and they simply did not wanted to do.
Dear Anonymous, Thank you for your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed your fish. The chef makes a side every day. If a customer wants a substitution, we try our best to accommodate that request. Unfortunately our grill was full of dinner orders and was unable to without compromising the food from the grill of others to accommodate your special request of grilled vegetables. We did offer you a Greek salad or Romaine salad which you refused. "they simply did not wanted to do" is untrue and unkind!
The Black Olive is better than ever. Great food, and excellent service.
Thank you George!
I dined at the Black Olive and few years prior and the experience was phenomenal. We were looking forward to a similar experience on this visit. Unfortunately the food and service have declined significantly from our previous visit. Hopefully it was just an off-night for them and this was an unusual experience not consistent with their typical offering.
Nathan, If you had a specific area of improvement it would be helpful. Your review is so vague and negative that I question your motive. If you really had a problem feel free to contact me and let me know about it so that we can not charge you for your meal. We are not in the business of unhappy guests. Your review is vague and negative. I feel that your review is disrespectful, not helpful, and suspect of conflict of interest! If it is not please contact us with more details. Dimitris
From the beginning of great baked bread to olive oil & olives, it was a great treat/dinner. Our server Arel(sp) was attentive, but not annoying. Great food & presentation....only wish someone told me or emphasize that you have available parking behind restaurant....parking is tough in that area. Will definitely come back & recommend!!
Dear PeteA, Thank you for taking the time to describe your experience with us. I am sorry parking is so difficult in the area. We look forward to your return. Kind Regards, Dimitris
They know their fish - a can’t miss! Staff very attentive and special. We were wondering how it would work out with COVID limitations but it did not disappoint. We felt safe with plenty of room between diners indoors. The stuffed calamari app was amazing and the fish entrees were cooked to perfection - which we have come to expect from this excellent restaurant.
This place has a great on-line introduction and explanation. It has a great menu on line. Little of it is true.
Service: The staff is young and very inexperienced. Enough said.
Wine List: We wonder if the owners don't actually drink alcohol? One of the 3 or 4 cocktails listed was a gin and tonic. I asked what gin they have, I was brought a drink and then shown a bottle I'd never seen before. Not good.
The menu is a little different from on line.
First the bread: They make their own "famous" sourdough which is grilled. We were served underbaked bread with pockets of gluey dough toward the center, not grilled.
We started with sardines wrapped in grape leaves and grilled. We've enjoyed this dish in Greece, Portugal and Italy and occasionally grill fresh sardines ourselves. These were inedible and I strongly suspect they were canned.
My husband ordered Octopus Salad, with "Pounded Octopus, grilled". Nope. It was a cut Octopus arm with tenticals, still good, but not the pricier Octopus steak that you pound and grill. He also ordered grilled scallops, served on an identical lettuce bed..these had been earlier pregrilled and warmed to plate.
I ordered a fresh fillet of halibut grilled. ALL fish dishes come with "Sweet Mashed Potatoes." aka mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. Weird. The asparagus had not been trimmed at the bottom, so you had to do your work cutting around the woody end.
Greatest disappointment was the tableside fish filleting. You can order a whole fish which they will fillet tableside. Not entirely true. They will cook a whole fish, then the manager will try to spoon the column and pin bones out tableside...a lengthy process for him. While doing that, your little plate of sweet mashed potato sits on a tray to the side.
We ordered a mixed berry sorbet. The sorbet was an icy granita, fairly tasteless. More like a chunky snowcone than a sorbet.
Would not recommend, it's much more media hype than skilled cooking!
Alt1, Your review not only contains a lot of material untruths, but because I spent so much time talking to you, I know that your reason for living is to complain. You are miserable people. Ungrateful and unkind. I think any restaurant would be better off without your presence. Your arrogance and lack of knowledge of food became transparent after the first few minutes of talking to you. We will be quite happy to never have miserable unkind people like you dine with us. You should be ashamed!
Incredible experience and such pride of ownership as one of last patrons got the history and tour including the wine cellar. Always checking if we needed anything or any questions but not intrusive ... dimitri was fantastic owner/host. Never got to order dinner as ordered from appetizers and share dishes and got a taste of multiple dishes. Presentation of food was equally good.
Thank you for your kind review!
This is the best place to eat fish in town. Nothing fancy, it is prepared simply, just grilled to perfection. Grilled octopus salad is to die for.
Food was very good, but the service was not so good. We waited forever on a gin and tonic and were then told that the bartender was distracted. What kind of an excuse is that? We also had to inquire a couple of times about a few other items. Did I mention we were the only patrons there for a while? Inexcusable service.
Dear Deana, I am sorry about your experience. We were having trouble staffing in March. Hopefully this is not a typical experience with us. Please let me know when you come back so that we can at least treat you to a drink and apologize in person. I am glad at least you enjoyed the food. Kind regards, Dimitris
The Black Olive is a phenomenal restaurant with a vast menu of Greek and Mediterranean dishes that are prepared to perfection. The service is impeccable and Demetrius is a friendly and gracious host.
We come here for both special occasions and at other times just because we love it so much and miss it!
Thank you BobH for your thoughtful review!
Upon walking in, we were ignored by two wait staff… We waited a full five minutes before being acknowledged and taken to our seats. Our seats were far in the back, which is fine, I’m assuming due to Covid. We then had to wait for water… And I began timing how long we sat there before we work knowledged again. We were just about ready to leave, when someone brought us water and let us know someone will be back to take our order. Our food did come quickly… However a wait staff person never returned to refill our drinks… I had one glass of wine through an entire meal… Normally I can drink at least three glasses. We will not be returning. The service was very poor
Dear Jessica W, I am sorry for your experience. Our staff has read your review and will work hard to make sure that that experience is not one others have at our restaurant. Please let me know if you choose to reconsider joining us, I would love to treat you to a bottle of wine to accompany your meal. Again we are sorry that your experience at the Black Olive was not satisfactory. We do however value honest feedback and use it to learn and grow. Kind Regards, Dimitris
Excellent flavor, everything we ordered came out hot and delicious. The red snapper and bronzino were phenomenal!
Owner was very nice and the staff was great! Service was very good overall. Owner filet/deboned the fish in our presence after it was cooked. Nice touch.
Cabernet - thought it should have been room temperature and not cold. Chilled would have been fine, not cold. Good portions.
Grilled Octopus Salad - Excellent
Bread- keep it to dip in salad along with the olives
Bronzni - good flavor
Snapper - good flavor, olive oil and I believe lemon juice or vinaigrette drizzle had a great flavor but it should be heated up before pouring on the fish. It made the fish cold on top. A solid 3 stars.
Should consider adding blinds in back room to block the outside porch area in winter. Looks a bit disheveled.
I would return for dinner, but not necessarily for special occasions. To be fair, getting by in COVID is tough so I’ll give 3.5 stars.
Lobster Bisque - Good flavor, but it was not thick enough
Dear Anonomous, I just wanted to respond to your points: Cabernet: we choose to serve cabernet at 58-60F which is cellar temperature. The expectation of room temperature wine is looked down upon by sommeliers. We feel that Fish is not something that needs to be piping hot. as it cools down immediately after being cooked the flavor is the best. If you heat lemon juice and olive oil it will destroy the flavor of the sauce. thanks for your feedback but I think we will pass on cooking the sauce!
This restaurant was absolutely amazing. From the service to the decadent food. The owner was extremely welcoming and friendly. Everyone was very knowledgeable on the food as well as the wine. We had a very quiet table and could speak to each other with ease from across the table. My partner and I had a very romantic Valentine’s Day thanks to The Black Olive. We will most certainly be back to visit Dimitri and his incredible staff.
Horrible! Fish was not prepared well at all. Service was not attentive. Not going back.
Your review is very vague and not helpful. Please contact us if you are a serious person. this is not the experience of most of our guests. If true, we would like to fix your experience, but if you are just into bashing restaurants during a pandemic or have ulterior motives than it is probably best to not come back and make room for those that do!
Our appetizers, the shrimp and scallops were awesome. I had the Dover Sole and it was ok, not a lot of flavor, definitely overrated. My wife had the crab cakes and they were not good at all. No semblance of lump crab meat as stated. And they used some strong seasoning, not old bay, that left a bitter taste in your mouth. The service was excellent especially the bartender. I will get lamb chops next time.
Dear Maceo, I am sorry that we did not describe the Dover sole as a mild delicate fish. Although it is James Bond's favorite in several of his movies, I actually like a fish with higher oil content. Your experience with our crab cake was an exception for us. Please let me know the next time you come so that I can make that up to you. thank you again for your feedback. Kind Regards Dimitris
Always an excellent meal. Highly recommend.
Demitri and the entire staff are an incredible joy. The food is fantastic, fresh, and wonderfully prepared. Thank you for making all of our experiences with you fabulous!! See you soon.
Our second visit in the past few weeks as early November weather was great. Excellent food and serviceonce again.
My husband was allowed to pick a bottle of wine from their extensive wine collection in the cellar. We had a great bottle of wine.
The dinner itself was delicious. The whole bronzino served with oil and herbs was enjoyable. However, we were disappointed in the desserts. The baklava was yummy. The carrot cake and flourless chocolate cake were not worth eating.
We were seated at a table right next to where cars pull up for their to go orders for the restaurant. Multiple times we had flashing car lights on our faces while we dined.
If the restaurant reconfigured the outside area to protect diners from pick up orders and they added lights and a heater we would go back. Just order the baklava for dessert!
The fish at Black Olive is the best I know of in Baltimore. We love the Mezzes as well
Bruce, You are the Best! Thanks for the feedback. The Black Olive Family
What happened! After reading reviews, we were so excited to have a special dinner at the Black Olive. Though the food WAS good, the service and ambiance were truly lacking. We were seated in a backroom at a round table for five or six - we were a couple, next to the kitchen. The waiter was unresponsive and not helpful in making selections from the menu. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed in our experience and certainly did not get the value for our money.
Amazing food and service. The oysters were delicious, and the fish was so fresh and tasty!
Great meal for our anniversary. Sat inside due to a little rain outside and the place smelled of wonderful roasted garlic. We ordered the cheese grape leaves, village pie, and octopus salad for appetizers - all delicious and good size portions - especially the octopus salad. For dinner, we had the chicken souvlaki and lobster pasta - both delicious. Attentive wait staff - we’ll be back!
Great food and staff, the sourdough bread is the BEST as well as the humus. Besides entrees, there are enough small plate dishes to make the dinner a discovery.
