El nombre del restaurante, L'Abattoir, rinde homenaje a su pintoresco pasado, pues está ubicado en la zona histórica de Gastown, entre Gaoler's Mews y Blood Alley, fue construido en el siglo XIX en el emplazamiento de la 1ª cárcel de Vancouver y originalmente lindaba con la principal carnicería de la ciudad y el distrito de la carne. El restaurante ocupa un edificio reformado de ladrillo y vigas de madera que combina azulejos clásicos franceses con elementos industriales y madera natural y cuenta con bar salón, comedor elevado, atrio lujoso con mucha luz y comedores privados. El chef Lee Cooper y el propietario y director Paul Grunberg se esmeran en destacar los puntos fuertes de comer y beber en el ambiente informal de L'Abattoir. El servicio, elegante pero sin pretensiones, está orquestado por el encargado general Ricardo Ferreira. Los platos, típicos de la costa oeste y con influencias francesas, se acompañan con la ecléctica carta de vinos, diseñada por la directora de vinos Lisa Haley, y la innovadora carta de cócteles para crear una experiencia culinaria exclusiva.

    Dined on Friday 24th March 23 Tasting menu consisted of excellent choices and well curated dishes. Amicable, knowledgeable, and friendly, yet professional servers. Noise level a bit on the high side but not disruptive. Very welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended.

    Amazing meal. Oyster dish and foie gras was amazing. We had the 9 course meal and added the foie gras as a 10th course. Also enjoyed with wine pairing. Will be back when we fly in again from San Francisco.

    What a tremendous experience. I've only been a few times over the years but it never disappoints. The sweetbreads are still unstoppable and the artichoke tart is stunning. Even the bread basket is a knockout. Jenna at the bar took such genuine and thoughtful care of us, as well as crafting incredible cocktails. Our server Matt was as knowledgable as he was quick with a wry joke or an interesting story about his world travels. Even the kitchen was all smiles! L'Abbatoir consistently lives up to the hype

    We came early and it was lovely and quiet. Really lovely ambiance, casual but refined. They were careful to spread out the diners as others came in so we never felt crowded. Service was superb and insightful but not intrusive. The serving staff were delighted to share their knowledge and I'm happy to report that they were not stuffy or snooty. Portions are just right (you will not feel overstuffed or underfed). Take your time to enjoy everything....the flavors are divine, and each dish is absolutely worth having. Absolutely one of the best meals I've enjoyed in the Vancouver dinning scene. It was an expensive dinner (about $220 plus tip for two mains, an entree, a beer, a cocktail, and two glasses of wine) so we would save it for special occasions. Our friends went on a different night and had a dinner for two on the Chef Tasting Menu with the wine add-on that topped at $700 so it definitely a consideration if you decide to go. For us, it was a special occasion so we justified it :)

    An absolute gem. Sean was our server and he was attentive, detailed and driven. My mistake on the endive salad. I didn’t know it was a bitter plant and was surprised at how strong it was. Again that was my misunderstanding. The pork chop and Diane steak were perfect and Andrew the sommelier guided us to a pair of well paired Syrah from Canada. A fabulous experience and a dinner I’ll never forget.

    Overall experience was fantastic. Amazing food, atmosphere and service. Food is expensive but everything tasted delicious. Sommelier was very helpful at pairing wine with our meals. Would recommend if you are looking for a nice evening out.

    Ambiance was too noisy to have a relaxed conversation at dinner. We shared two appetizers and two mains. The salad for the price was bland and disappointing. The smoked salmon was flavorful and delightful. The sable fish was cooked perfectly, and served with a nice accompaniment. The trout was the big surprise. It was also perfectly cooked, flavorful, with accompaniments that complemented the fish. The cocktails were disappointing. In particular the martini was just difficult to drink, and I love most martinis. Overall, it was a good, not great, dining experience. For this price they need to deliver from start to finish.

    Our first trip out of the USA was to return this Vancouver BC restaurant in Gas Town for their special Valentine’s Day dinner. What a marvelous evening with fine food and exceptional service. We chose to have the wine pairings with each of the five courses. From the first course of lobster bisque with champagne to the final dessert course each item was delicious and explained with detail by well-informed staff. We even stopped at the bar before leaving for coffee and to extend our experience with the exuberant staff.

    The chef’s menu was really mediocre for the given price. The restaurant was also extremely loud to the point I could barely hear my friend sitting across the table. The highlights were the bread and slow cooked quail & lamb dish.

    We had the chefs menu paired with the premium wine tasting. Every member of staff we interacted with was professional and friendly. The sommelier was lovely, as was our server. The wine was good, paired nicely with each dish; although for $155/person for the wine alone you’d expect to get more than just a singular glass at most. The food was good, but largely overpriced for the quality and quantity. Most of the dishes came out Luke warm. +$700 for 2 people for the premium wine pairing and chefs menu is incredibly overpriced. We left quite disappointed in the overall value.

    Opened on time, very courteous, prompt door reception. Coat closet which is fantastic. Had the Chefs tasting menu with Paired drinks which also was fantastic. Some of the dishes were out of this world particularly the cod and lamb mains. Overall a great experience. Only downside we had was the noise level made it extremely difficult to hear the servers complimentary explanations of each pairing, or just conversation in general. Other than that an exceptional meal and we will return.

    Great service. We took the tasting menu. Ling cod and the beef tartare were the best thing on there. Andy the sommelier was awesome and made some terrific wine recommendations for the meal.

    First time at L'Abattoir. This venue is where the Irish Heather used to be on Carrall St. We originally had reservation for 6:45, but were in Vancouver early. Upon entering the restaurant at 5:30, we were greeted right away, and the very accommodating maitre de, was able to seat us right away, in a very nice table overlooking the bar. Our waiter was very attentive without being overly intrusive. He described most of the dishes and made great recommendations. We had the baked oysters and wild smoked salmon; both were absolutely delicious. Next up were the mains of Steak Diane and the Grilled Venison. Again, spot on and cooked medium rare. The service was nicely timed. The menu items are on the higher priced side, but for a once in a while occasion, well worth it. The only thing that kind of bugged me was the credit card reader had gratuity increments of 19%, 22%, and 25%. Tip what you want, but that starting point is a little excessive in my opinion. However, that did not cut into a great dinner.
