Mentioned in both the Good Food Guide and Harden's, and set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce, lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by Head Chef & Director Lee Adams. In addition to the food, we offer a meticulously curated wine list and innovative cocktails.World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind the name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross, and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!A warm welcome awaits diners from Front of House Manager Mary Jane Frost and her team. We look forward to seeing you!Due to space and storage constraints, we do not cater for the vegan diet. Purchased in March 2025 with support from the Government’s Community Ownership Fund, it is now owned by 463 shareholders who invested to secure its future. Their support has safeguarded the pub for generations to come, with shareholders from the village, the wider community, and even overseas.The Swan offers a wide range of food and drink inspired by global flavours, alongside Kentish real ales and ciders. Much of the produce is locally sourced, with some grown just metres from the pub, including strawberries, soft fruits, and fresh salads from nearby farms. Open Tuesday to Sunday with food served all day from noon.We now have 3 Giant heated Tipis, they provide lots of fresh air and a lovely open environment, they are also heated.Formerly an 18th Century farmhouse boasting exposed beams, oak floors, exposed brickwork and oak tables. This leads to a very relaxed and cosy atmosphere with candle lit tables and real flame stoves.The cuisine is typically modern European, classically cooked using cornerstones such as stock pots to create their sauces with a brigade that has a passion for what they do.
