Talk about an incredible hidden gem. This one’s Japanese, (very sleek) just barely within the Richmond District, and inside it are a mere 20 seats, so they’re usually busy. They have two different chef-selected omakase menus to choose from, with sake pairings for both, and people seem to rave about every single dish they have (except for that they’re small). In a city that has a lot of great Japanese food, this omakase is one of the more reasonably-priced ones available, with wonderfully fresh and flavorful fish, served in a modern and minimal neighborhood nook.

Gary Danko is a James Beard Award-winning chef and the namesake of this famous fine dining institution, in San Francisco. Over the nearly two decades they’ve been in service, they’ve consistently served some of the most delectable French food in the Bay. Interestingly enough, they do their tasting menus a little differently than most. You choose whether you want three, four, or five courses—from the appetizer, cheese, seafood, meat, or dessert sections—and then make your selections any way you like. While this place is definitely best kept for a special occasion, and the price tag is big, so are the portions (you definitely won’t need to grab a burger after this dinner).

With a nod to SF’s seven hills, this intimate and cozy Italian spot (in Russian Hill) truly feels like a neighborhood bistro. Their menu—emphasizing and celebrating handmade pastas—isn’t small, but isn’t particularly large either. They keep things simple here with a handful of both antipasti and pasta options, several salads, and a few other entees like market-fresh fish, pork chop, and veal. This is not a place to eat adventurously, it’s where you go for delicious comfort and wonderfully warm service. If you come here for their outstanding pastas, impressive wine selections, and romantic ambiance, you’ll get them all in spades.
