Medium Rare - Capitol Hill
My cousin had come from out of town, so we wanted a nice place to just sit and catch up, without having to go through too much effort. I'd never been to Medium Rare, but enjoyed the food. The 2 portions gimmick seemed reminiscent of a much more famous place in Paris/New York, but I couldn't quite place it.
It was great!
Wonderful! My go-to place to take friends from out of town.
Good for dinner but terrible brunch option unless you are going to order their classic steak and frites
The menu concept at Medium Rare is fantastic! What a great idea.
The entire staff at Medium Rare were excellent in their Customer Service.
Definitely a keeper!
Great value for the food. They have raised their prices since I last dined there. A glass of wine.... too pricey! My steak was undercooked but the waiter took care of that.
I like Medium Rare, but if you only serve one thing, it’s got to be right. On our last visit it didn’t meet the mark. Service was slow and the place was way below maximum occupancy. The steak was not medium rare as we ordered -it was rare and cold, not fresh off the grill. It was also way too loud. An unsatisfactory dining experience.
It is a simple idea and is very well executed. You sit down, they ask you how you like your steak and then they bring you their pre-fix menu really well prepared. It is one of my favorite places in the city.
We had been anticipating a trip to Medium Rare for some time and finally planned ahead enough to get a reservation. Upon getting to a mostly empty place we wondered why it had been so difficult. And then we were offered a place literally right next to the front door with easily 20 better, empty tables in clear view. What had I done wrong in the first 10 seconds (or in the month prior since I'd made the reservation) to have them put us there? They did acquiesce to our request to be seated in a more secluded spot after that. After the initial head shaking, we found our waitperson was very helpful and attentive and the food and service to be great.
Something we found surprising upon receiving our steak is that they slice it for you prior to serving. So it's not like you get a perfectly cooked hunk of beef just waiting for you to dive in. Rather, you get slices of beef like your mom would cut for you. We didn't expect this and found it a bit amusing. It was definitely fork-tender and delicious, as were the fries and the special sauce. And they bring your order in two servings in order to make sure you're getting hot food all evening. A good idea, though the second serving is just piled onto your current plate in whatever state it's in at the time. I think a second warm plate of food would have been better on the eyes.
All in all, we're glad we went and had a good time. But Medium Rare doesn't exactly fit with what I'm looking for in a good plate of steak frites. Don't think we'll be back, but I'm glad we went.
Excellent brunch. Drinks are watered down, but overall everything was on point. .
Alexis was great! Thank you!
Our waitress was fantastic and friendly. She made the evening really special. We were celebrating our five year wedding anniversary and she brought us two flutes of prosecco. She made the evening even more special.
The food was good. The steak had a nice sauce, and it was cooked well. You get more bang for your buck at Iron Age, if you like Korean bbq. But this was good for a simple, tasty meal. The service wasn’t great though.
I enjoyed it! My husband and I would go back.
Sparkler lasted 5ever
This is a very consistent restaurant in terms of both food and service. The noise level is bad unless you are in the front. Great bar.
Great and simple concept. Food is very good! Will definitely come back!
great place to take the family... great meal.
My favorite brunch spot in DC because of the great value and many beverage options. Only downside is I would not recommend Medium Rare to a vegetarian. Everything here is always great - ambiance, food, service, etc. Highly recommend for brunch.
Good place for a healthy carnivore. And they keep it simple
We live in the neighborhood and head to Medium Rare at least 3 times a month. The food is consistently delicious. The staff is professional and friendly.
Delicious food and really fun vibe. Love that they bring a second round of steak midway through--so great!
Came for the brunch...barely any alcohol in the bloodies or mimosas....salad was bagged salad, bread was cold and they store it in an open shelf that touches a brick wall. Steak hash has the steak overdone and the poached egg oddly raw on the outside but the yolk was cooked. The French toast was more like deep fried pieces of bread with powdered sugar - very large serving, very sweet. All three of us wanted the check and then the waiter asked if everything was ok, to avoid an awkward moment in the middle of the brunch service I said it was fine. Then the manager came over and asked twice how everything was, very awkward when we all just wanted our check to leave. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place especially on barracks row where there are many other fantastic brunch options!
The food is outstanding. Love it.
Medium Rare was a great find on our trip to DC. Had a wonderful steak dinner with the family, excellent service and staff.
If you like steak this is a great restaurant, they only serve one meal so those looking for any type of menu this is not the place to go. Extremely limited bar selection as well
Absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Hostess was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Server was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and professional. Food was terrific. Manager Jovan was perfectly delightful. (He's also very handsome.) Great atmosphere and ambience. I would recommend this place to anyone.
My friends and I had a fun and tasty dinner experience at Medium Rare. And, what a clever idea for a restaurant - fixed price menu for the salad, bread, fries and meat - no worries about what to order. I also liked that they served the meat and fries in two separate portions. In doing so, the meal was fresh and warm throughout.
I would definitely recommend Medium Rare to my meat eating friends!
Great value. Steak was tasty and cooked perfectly.
We've been dining here for years-- this team gets it right consistently!
It’s probably the best deal in town. Food is great and service is friendly and fast. Only wish they put champagne in their mimosas.. it’s basically orange juice. Besides that one of my favorite restaurant in DC.
We were sat by the windows. Great view. But the music was so loud. I couldn’t hear the waiter. We couldn’t hear when he mentioned the 2nd plate - so we assumed half a steak was the entire meal. We enjoyed it overall - but the thunderous music was not a highlight.
Do not expect to get what you see in the picture. The french fries were ok, not very crispy. The meat is presliced and covered with “sauce,” which was good but it sure isn’t bernaise. The salad was good and the bread was good. Two helping is a nice treat.
Excellent service and food
The food was very good and was a good value. Because of the set menu, the kitchen started preparing our food right away so we did not have to wait very long. The desserts are expensive. The only problem with the restaurant is that they packed a lot of tables into a pretty small area. There was maybe two feet of space between our table and each of the two adjacent ones. I could hear the man beside me talking about how he almost invested in Bitcoin in 2012.
This place has a great atmosphere, fantastic staff, and great tasting food. The set menu of steak and fries is great and the atmosphere makes this place a solid choice for date, dinner with friends, or for watching the game at the bar. Would go again!
This mini-chain's formula of salad, steak, fries just plain works!
Really good, the portions were just smaller than expected and they ran out of beverage options fast, other than that it was very nice, great service and ambience with good food.
Great food and great value. Will definitely return again soon!
The special sauce is delicious!
My sister was visiting and we wanted to try a new place. I’ve walked by medium rare multiple times and was dying to try it.
We went for brunch and was excited about the bottomless mimosas and fixed menu. We were immediately disappointed. The mimosas were mostly orange juice and after two we all felt sick. The service was slow and they hide us in corner. We also never got our coffee we ordered.
I was very disappointed by this experience and I would not recommend this place to anyone.
