Amberlea Japanese Tea House is a hidden gem in the Kent countryside, near Leeds Castle and the North Downs. Guided by Okami (lady of Amberlea) Thuy, whose passion for Japanese cuisine and culture shapes every detail, Amberlea offers a serene blend of food, tradition, and tranquillity. Our signature kaiseki-inspired tasting menu and Japanese afternoon tea celebrate seasonal flavours with elegance.

Guests praise us on Facebook and Google for authentic cultural experiences and heartfelt hospitality. With tatami-inspired interiors, a calming Zen garden, and a cosy backyard for al fresco dining is intimate yet welcoming. Beyond dining, guests can join cooking classes, tea ceremonies, or stay overnight with our cultural escape packages. At Amberlea, every visit is more than a meal — it’s a journey to Japan.

We are not a restaurant. Each menu is thoughtfully created for you, inspired by your tastes, preferences, and any allergies or dislikes you share with us in advance.

At Amberlea Japanese Tea House, time unfolds gently, each moment leading into the next like the turning of the seasons. Guests are invited on a journey of stillness, warmth, and quiet beauty, where Kent’s harvest and Japanese tradition meet in harmony. Kindly note that we tailor every menu depending on your likes or dislikes. We can only do this by having a phone conversation with you prior to your booking; so every reservation needs to be confirmed by a phone conversation. The Tea of Stillness The day begins within the tea house, where guests gather in calm silence. A single bowl of tea is offered — its rising steam reflecting the cycles of nature, its taste reminding us that life is simple, fleeting, and profound. This quiet ceremony opens the heart to what follows. The Zen Onsen From the tea house, the path leads into the garden, where a warm Zen onsen awaits. Rose petals float on the water, soothing the feet as herbal tea and a delicate sweet are served. In this moment, the body softens, the mind rests, and nature itself becomes the host. The Meal by the Hearth As afternoon drifts into evening, guests gather around the glowing irori hearth. Here, fire becomes the centerpiece of the meal. The finest produce of Kent — crisp garden vegetables, fragrant rice, and fruits shaped into poetry — are prepared with the sensibilities of Japanese craft. Each dish is simple, seasonal, and shared, a reflection of warmth and togetherness. The Poetry of Light As night settles, lanterns are lit, their glow flickering across beams and branches. Guests step once more into the garden, where the cool air carries the scents of earth and blossom. The cycle of the day is complete: tea for stillness, water for renewal, fire for nourishment, and light for closure. Within Kent’s beauty and Japan’s embrace, the essence of life is revealed — gentle, warm, and eternal in its impermanence.

At Amberlea, we believe that food should be prepared with mindfulness, respect, and heart. Cooking, like tea, is a practice of presence — every ingredient chosen with care, every gesture a reflection of harmony. Kindly note that we tailor every menu depending on your likes or dislikes. We can only do this by having a phone conversation with you prior to your booking; so every reservation needs to be confirmed by a phone conversation. Our classes are kept intentionally small (2-3 guests) — ensuring that each participant receives close guidance, time to practice, and the freedom to ask questions. ✨ What you’ll learn: • How to prepare authentic ramen, with rich broth and delicate toppings • The art of rolling sushi, with balance and precision • A selection of seasonal Japanese dishes, chosen to reflect tradition and taste Once your dishes are prepared, you will be invited to the main tea house to enjoy the meal you have created. Surrounded by the quiet beauty of the garden, it becomes more than a class — it is a truly delightful and memorable experience, where learning and sharing come together in harmony.

It's hard to imagine that in the tranquil British countryside, you could feel instantly transported to a traditional Japanese tea house in Kusatsu. The tea house enjoys an exceptional location — looking out from inside, the sweeping mountain views beautifully frame the Japanese garden, creating the closest thing I've seen in Britain to a genuine karesansui (dry landscape garden) style. The garden plants aren't merely decorative either; many of the ingredients used in the dishes are sourced directly from it. The food itself was outstanding — delicious, with generous portions and impressive variety that clearly showed the owner had poured a great deal of care and thought into every plate. The drinks and desserts further elevated the entire meal. After we finished eating, the owner kindly took the time to chat with us and share the story of the tea house's development. The peaceful surroundings, exceptional food, and warm, heartfelt hospitality made our two-hour reservation pass in the blink of an eye. I enjoyed one of the most memorable afternoons I've had in a long time and have already booked my next visit. Highly recommended!
