Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre and Café sits quietly on the shores of Tae Rak (Lake Condah), surrounded by birdlife, expansive views and bushland. Overlooking the World Heritage listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, the Bush Tucker Café offers a dining experience deeply connected to Country and culture.

Bush tucker inspired dishes sit alongside familiar favourites, ensuring something for every taste. Native ingredients feature across the menu, with Smoked Kooyang (eel), influencing many flavours.

The Signature Kooyang Tasting Platters invite guests to explore traditional foods through a contemporary lens, celebrating one of the world’s oldest known aquaculture systems.

The menu caters for a wide range of dietary needs, with many gluten free and dairy free options available.

Open daily 9am–4pm. Breakfast until 11.30am, lunch 10am–2pm, with coffee and cake served all day.

We visited Tae Rak for lunch with our family and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. After ordering, we waited over an hour and a half to receive our first item, a serving of shoestring fries, followed shortly by a kid's nuggets and chips. The remaining meals arrived sporadically over the next 30 minutes, making it impossible for our table to enjoy the meal together. Adding to the frustration, our second starter, the trio of dips, did not arrive until approximately two hours after we had placed our order and towards the end of our meal. Looking around the cafe, it appeared many other tables were experiencing similar delays. The food itself was enjoyable, but the wait times and lack of communication/coordination in service significantly impacted our experience. Based on this experience, we would be reluctant to return. I’d also say the lack of railing on the deck is cause for concern for your children.

What a lovely experience with the wonderful view of the lake, bird life and Kooyong tank education about the life cycles of the eel. The service was friendly and gracious, the meal presentation outstanding and the flavours wonderful

Food was great. 2 adults, 2 kids around $130 for a meal and drink each $$. Very nice setting and views although currently undergoing renovations and extensions.

Very difficult to comment when doing so for such an eclectic group of travellers in our party. However, it was generally agreed that they'd all had a great time, and that most were considering returning with family and friends to share the experience - that that has to be good feedback. None of our group had ever visited Tae Rak before, and they enjoyed the meal (we had shared tasting plates).

Tae Rak a tranquil gem hidden off the beaten track . Birdlife , changing landscape colours and feeling of peace . I am local to the area and took my visitors for lunch at the cafe . Varied menu in quiet setting overlooking the Lake . Attentive polite staff . Considered a tour as it would give context to this first peoples land but Tour price a bit expensive per person . Overall this world heritage place is not to be missed . 10/10

We (a group of 10) enjoyed a light lunch in a relaxed informal setting looking over the lake. Myself a my partner shared a tasting plate focusing on the eels Tae Rak is developing a reputation for. The plate was filled with enough choice in flavours to keep our taste buds interested and together with a side salad sufficient to satisfy our appetite. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic rounding out a pleasurable experience we will be happy to do again.

The food was dreadful. Unbuttered toast and overcooked scrambled eggs. We also waited for nearly an hour for the squid. My friend went to the counter and asked where the squid was. The waitress asked the chef who replied we’re out of squid. No one told us. They offered something else from the menu. This took another 25 minutes. I’ve been there before and the food was nice. They must have had a bad cook on this day.
