Chiko is a great restaurant. Inventive and delicious Japanese food with European influences. Surprisingly strong for a small Brooklyn restaurant. The food competes with the best restaurants in NYC.
We very much enjoyed our time at Chiko. My wife and I went there on a Christmas date. We made a reservation at 9oclock and arrived to find out that we were the only ones sitting at that time (don’t worry, the sittings before were all filled). As a result we had a private tasting menu experience. While I can’t say that this will happen often, the chefs talent and creativity will undoubtedly remain for a full group of patrons.
We really enjoyed all of the fresh fish, particularly the tuna and what the chef called “the Italian” which was red seabream. I liked the hamachi that had hazelnut and butter on it. While top to bottom we enjoyed the high quality food and experience, we didn’t feel that we had one of those “out of this world” reactions when you take a bite of something. Due to its ever evolving seasonal menu, I can’t imagine the chef won’t develop one of those dishes soon.
The last thing I will mention is the value. Given its location and who it’s trying to cater to, we felt the cost per person was a little inflated. They should consider $115/person. Especially knowing that they’ll soon be getting a liquor license. We highly recommend this unique dining experience at Chiko. Get there before too many people hear about it!
Come here if you want to try flavors that are not only new, interesting, but also delicious! I will definitely come back again. I was a bit reluctant at first, but most dishes were scrumptious. Worth the money!
I was so pleasantly surprised with Chiko. I ate at Chef's Table at Brooklyn fair a month ago and I would have to say I preferred Chiko. Currently the only downside is no liquor license, but that is soon to be rectified.
They offered 2 supplements to the tasting menu, which we got, and they were amazing. Every dish was great, yet some were exceptional.
We enjoyed very much our dinner. Cozy atmosphere, great service and delicious food prepared to perfection. We will definitely repeat the experience....
Amazing. Everything was incredible. Can not recommend enough
Great food but very small portions hence the 13 course menu. Friendly service and they did a great job explaining each dish. Would definitely recommend for a date night or special occasion. Not good for groups.
The set menu format merges different cousines along a fundamental Japanese core of superbly crafted and innovative courses.
Excellent food, true discovery in each dish.
The experience we had at Chiko was spectacular. Taste of the food was amazing and would highly recommend you all to pay the visit here. Chef Xiao and the sous chef both pay attention to so much detail and do an amazing job at explaining every aspect of the dish they present to you. All the dishes were a work of art!
Xiao prepared a unique, whimsical and truly delicious meal, reflective of his years living in NYC cooking Asian and Italian cuisines. Outstanding restaurant!
2nd time back and didn’t disappoint
Creative flavors with serious attention to every detail. Super friendly chef and staff.
Go before it gets really hard to book!
Absolutely outstanding - on par with Shuko, except at least for now, Chiko is BYOB with no corkage fee, so from a value perspective, it's hard to beat that. All tasting menu kaiseki, very creative Japanese and sushi. We go out a lot, and this was possibly our best meal of the year, and may go into our all-time top 5. Brilliant hole-in-the-wall that deserves a lot more traffic, but in the meantime, get there ASAP with the BYOB and while you can still get a seat at a good time before the reviews hit and the secret is out. We have nothing to do with the restaurant, chefs and ownership...we just enjoyed our meal there two days ago *that much*. Five stars.
We had a lovely time here. Chef Xiao skillfully executes Japanese cuisine as a lens to reflect upon his experiences coming to New York. Contrasts in flavor, texture, and temperature resulted in courses that were challenging and full of surprises, but all the pieces, for the most part, worked brilliantly together. This is the perfect restaurant for those who love personal, delicious food in an intimate setting.
Amazing evening of cool dining
Such an amazing culinary experience. The food was superb and the chef walks you through the ingredients and thought process behind each dish. Will definitely be back
Amazing and original experience! I love how each dish was created base on the chef's personal stories... as an immigrant but truly uniquely New York. Can't wait to return back...
Amazing new place
Quality tasting menu of unique dishes
Chef and his team are super friendly and explain each dish
Will be back soon!
Outstanding ! Best Japanese in NY ! It was just incredible, very creative, welcoming and excellent excellent food ! They should have a Michelin star. Run for it !
