New bar in the Arts District and opening day for the public! Yes, I AM excited!
From the folks behind James Beard-recognized Milpa and Nocturno (DJ Flores and Lu Lopez).
Atmosphere: Blade Runner, only absent the grunge and rain. Walls plastered with reproduction and authentic Japanese posters; color-changing paper lanterns and faux tropical plants from the high beamed ceilings; mounted swords; TVs over the bar showing the original B+W 47 Ronin, Akira, and vintage Japanese commercials (were you aware Arnold Schwarzenegger shilled Nissan Noodles in his youth? Now you are.). Excellent sound system, which includes analog reel-to-reel. Plus (free to play(!)) Galaga and Street Fighter II cabinets.
Seating* is limited. Seven-seat bar, nine chairs at bar-height tables, four seats at counter against north wall.
*As chairs are all the same height the Cobra Clutch has flexibility to accommodate guests around the room on the fly.
n.b. Cobra Clutch shares a wall, passage, and PIN-protected facilities with Houston TX Hot Chicken.
Drinks (all $18)
Inventive, powerful and delicious.
Tried both Kakigōri** (Japanese shaved ice, authentic machine on site) tiki drinks
Cobra Clutch, presented in the cobra tiki and
Sake Painkiller, presented in the Japanese lantern tiki. Both delicious, but preferred the Painkiller for its more tiki-ish-ness flavors and (my impression) better liquid volume.
Roma y Ginza: Loved the strong zippy citrus tropical flavors and the alcohol brain smash.
Grilled Banana Pisco Sour: Dessert-y, but no way cloying, delightful sour tart citrus tempered with the mild banana. Strong (or my previous cocktails' cumulative effect hit my bloodstream). Had two.
**These were presented in custom mugs, available for separate $30 purchase.
Value: Might seem high on paper for the location, but when one takes into account the inventiveness coupled with the commitment to the theme and the buzzy impact, most excellent.
