Joya del vecindario
Encantador

Come enjoy our family's over 100 year-old Northern Italian restaurant.

Whether you dine with us in our main dining room, the Terrace or upstairs (in what was once our family's home), we warmly welcome you. If you're looking for that special restaurant where you can take a breath from the fast lane and go back to a time when restaurants were not part of a chain and the owner became a friend, the food was always great, and as my grandmother said, "You feel better for coming"....then you've found the right spot. We combine the classic Italian Menu and new creative dishes, with full attention to both. If you enjoy fine wine, you've found a new home. Our cellar contains well over 3,500 choices dating from the late 1800's.

My first visit to this lovely restaurant, that has old-world elegance and a delightful and attentive staff. On a Tuesday evening, there was a pleasant buzz in the main dining room while it remained sufficiently quiet to allow for easy conversation at the table. (The nights there is singing will be louder!) The seared sea scallops di Modena was delicious, both the scallops themselves and the wonderful fettuccine. I had a signature dish, the veal Del Rio, upgrading the pasta to tortellacci while keeping the basic minestrone soup. All three were wonderful choices! The veal was tender and very tasty, the tortellacci were quite special, and the minestrone soup was deep and flavorful. My partner had the salmon. That was good but somewhat less successful, with the spicing somewhat muted, and (no surprise) served skin-off. I guess that the halibut or branzino would be more successful. Nonetheless, this was a wonderful experience, the sort of place that one wants to keep coming back to, as I am sure we will do.

Slow service. Food was not what I expected. Lively atmosphere…but waited too long for food.

We're regular patrons of Del Rio, and as always, the food was delicious, the ambience was warm and inviting, if you are seeking a place that feels like it's embedded in a community and has a rich history. If you've never been to Highwood, the trip is well worth it to both visit this lovely restaurant and to explore the charming, quirky little community nestled among much more bustling northern burbs in Chicago.
