The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

Food was typically really good, but Formosa let’s itself down time after time: 1) service - it took 20 minutes to order a drink and menu, then after the food arrived I had to remind the server of my drink 2) all of the three dishes arrived separately at different times vs. all together, meaning our group were eating at different times 3) the music was too loud on the patio, it kept going higher and higher, which meant we couldn’t hear the group around the table

We went for special occassion having enjoy the Formosa in the past. Maybe there's a new chef this year/ It's not nearly as good as we remember. The service was not good. We were put in an alcove off the bar, out of view of the servers who had to pass through the bar and reception desk to get to us. Love the old Hollywood vibe, but that's about it for this visit.

Great retro, atmospheric experience. We got there for the Golden Hour menu and had the Ginger Roger's amazing. Will go back.

The food at the Formosa was absolutely delicious! The walnut shrimp was more like big prawns and the best we’ve had. Top the great food off with incredible service, a decent price and an ambiance/history that you could feel made it an absolute must when in Hollywood!

A classic spot that's been on my list forever and it definitely stands up to its reputation - a really delicious and well kept gem in WeHo that does not disappoint in any aspect. Love this and fantastic service.

Anton was our server for this amazing lunch we had on tuesday - such great service and a wonderful lunch deal for $24 picking and choosing between items makes me want to order two to share. The food at Formosa Cafe is so very well done and doesnt have the heaviness of other Chinese cuisine. You feel light after eating here even if you're full. Thank you to the amazing Formosa for such a great meal. We will be back and wearing our merch while doing so.

It was way too expensive for what we got and it was honestly the worst Bloody Mary we have ever had. The food was fine but overpriced for Chinese food.

The ambiance and decor are spot on. I got there early enough to look around. The drink I ordered off the menu was very good but we ordered several old fashioneds and they were not the best. Stick to their specialties.

Had the DOPEST experience on the Patio! We live on the same block and love the walk there and usually we eat on the inside but tonight we enjoyed a beautiful summer evening upstairs on the patio and the environment was S TIER! The lighting, The greenery, the music, the entire ambience was A VIBE!!!! Absolutely love love LOVE Fermosa Cafe!

I couldn’t wait to visit this historic gem. We were sat in the train car which was very cool, but it’s a small enclosed space and makes it very loud. It also seems it prevented our server from making regular rounds, I saw several people leave prior to ever being greeted by a server. The explanation of the menu (typical Chinese restaurant sized portions) as being made to share left a couple of people in our party confused. I get it that in theory the entrees are meant to be family style but when we tried to order our own entrees (because we don’t like to share) it seemed like we were being told we were ordering wrong when in fact we just wanted our own entrees. The ordering process was completely confusing. The food came out almost too quickly as we were halfway through our meals before our drinks showed up. It doesn’t seem like the server knew how to put an order in correctly. The restaurant was not busy and there was no one at the bar, so it was not slammed. If we had gotten our drinks sooner we would have probably ordered another round but we were moved in and out so quickly (it was not very busy) that we had no time to chat and enjoy the atmosphere. We left kind of exhausted. Also some food never arrived because the server forgot and I was too tired to see if it was on the bill. I’d definitely return in hopes of getting a different server and a different experience.

I’ve been going to the Formosa for over 30 years. It’s always been a great bar, but now it is a great restaurant! You really can’t go wrong - everything is delicious. Great service and legendary ambiance. A classic Hollywood spot.

Went there for a birthday and had the opportunity to try most of the dishes. I loved the steak and broccolini, the chow mean and fried rice are packed with a memorable taste, the walnut shrimp is out of this world, and the sweet chili wontons were mouthwatering. The decoration is mesmerizing! Beautiful place overall, I highly recommend this place for any occasion.

We attended Cafe Formosa on a Tuesday evening. The ambiance and decoration of this place was extremely cool. However, the food was extremely disappointing. We ordered multiple dishes that had really no flavor. Most of the sauces tasted like they came out of a bottle and were really one note. We were really looking forward to this place, but overall weren't happy about the food we had there.

Fantastic place to see full of history. Decor is spot on, you really feel transported in time to the old Hollywood days! Food is tasty but way too spicy. I wish they indicated the spice level on the menu, but since EVERYTHING is spicy, I guess that's not going to be helpful. I can't eat spice so I had a hard time eating at all. Definitely not authentic asian food, it's fusion. I'd go for the experience over the food, but our companions love the food so everyone has their taste.

Brian was an exceptional server. His special attention to detail and service was an excellent and a perfect representation of hospitality. Because of Brian we learned of DAY MORI the in house magician who was also a phenomenal performer.

We have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant and drove by Formosa. I believe it has been around forever so we felt it would be a good place to try. We dined early in the evening so the restaurant was super quiet. Service was great and so was the food. We did feel like the menu was a bit limited, but we still enjoyed it.

The hostess and servers were more than accommodating. I’ve rarely had such friendly service and been so taken care by of before. The food was ok but that’s not what we came for. It was all about the ambiance and decor which did not disappoint.

Fun iconic Hollywood restaurant. A little salty though, but food was mostly good. Waiter was great till we got the food & literally never saw him again. Had to get up to get more water & the bill.

Loud, awkward layout, tiny tables and awkward service. Food is described as “to share” by server but it’s not consistent and depends on dish. Not a great date spot - loud and servers and runners running into the backs of chairs to squeeze by vs. going another way. Might return for drinks at the bar for happy hour but not again for a meal.

The staff is very friedlich and quick. Food average, we liked the dumplings and the pork meat. But the noodle dishes weren't great, the chicken was dry. Nice atmosphere
