La Trattoria - Alexandria
Sat, Sun 12:00 pm–4:00 pm
Tue–Sun 4:30 pm–11:00 pm
The food was delicious, but we didn’t get it until 1 hour and 45 minutes after we were seated. There is a disclaimer on the menu warning that it can take awhile to make the food, but this was an unreasonable wait time. The server was apologetic and comped a round of drinks (although my husband does not drink). We were also in the small upstairs room with the piano player, which was too loud to hear each other speak. I’d recommend sitting outside.
We had a lovely dinner. The ambiance is great--very romantic—and the food was worth the wait. It’s an experience, much more like a European meal where you take your time and enjoy yourselves. We had fried artichokes to start, which were good, but the real highlights were the ossobuco and the cavatelli. The former was moist and fell off the bone, and the pasta was fresh and had a beautiful texture. The desserts were spectacular as well—ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu, both made in house. There was a bit of a wait, but again, we enjoyed taking our time in these days where everyone is in a rush, especially as there was a wonderful pianist playing. We will definitely return!
Best Italian in Virginia
This was the perfect spot for my birthday dinner. The piano bar was excellent along with the food service and atmosphere. We really enjoyed the evening and will be back. Kelsey even showed us around and upstairs to the special lounge and piano area. Great night great food and drink. Excellent service. Thank you all.
Disappointing meal and service. 1 waitress and a few bar staff for a crowded room of tables. Calamari was very cold. Risotto Csrbonara and salmon good, Caccitore fair. Didn’t really measure up to the great reviews we read before going.
Where is the chef?? The bruschetta had no olive oil, no garlic, and no flavor. The spaghetti sauce was very so so.
The only thing we actually enjoyed was the garlic bread. Worst of all was the hideously metallic and bitter iced tea. We will not be returning.
Not quite authentic or capable Italian kitchen, food was ok, but not adherent to structure and taste that a better restaurant serving an Italian meal would have had. Bread was a terrible disappointment
After moving to the area earlier this year I was determined to find a dining experience that could become my reliable spot when I wanted a guaranteed wonderful experience. This evening I found it. Old town is known for its extensive list of dining establishments but La Trattoria stands above the rest. Everything from the service and the food to the building itself was just incredible. Even if I’m not in the mood for food this place is my new go-to for a quick cocktail. Job well done La Trattoria, you have a new regular customer.
Booked this on a whim, and so glad we did. We have been to several Italian places in the area and this was by far one of the best. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. The food was amazing. I would definitely recommend it. I’ll defiitely be back.
The food, service, ambiance was elegant. A perfect night out. High recommend.
Everyone was delightful
Atmosphere was very nice, as was the service. I was very disappointed with the “specialty of the house” eggplant parmigiana. Two round slices of breaded eggplant, buried under a mound of sauce, with very little cheese. A small side of linguine, no salad or bread for $16. Maybe because I am from NY and often dine in Italian restaurants I expected MUCH more from this dish. Not only eas it small, but had very little flavor. I personally would not return.
The pasta bolanaise was excellent. Bruschetta Was served with cheese on the bread was not as good Service was good but it was quite noisy
My husband and I enjoyed dining at La Trattoria. The food was fresh and very, very good. I think next time I will have the pasta carbonara or the lobster ravioli. I did not see it on the menu the night we were there so I ordered the linguini vongole with the white sauce. It was very good. My husband had the veal saltimbocca and really loved it. Excellent portions. We loved the piano player but, I wish the upstairs was more inviting with regard to decor like the dining room downstairs that looked charming. Other than that it was a great experience.
We were pleasantly surprised overall by this restaurant. Nice quiet atmosphere with attentive service. They asked if were going to the theatre to ensure not being rushed to eat.
There is a nice wine list and special house cocktails.
We started with cocktails fried Calimari and unbelievable good homemade garlic toast. Yum!!
We all had different main courses. My wife said her lasagna was among the best she has had. I had the caveletti which was wonderful. One guest had the margherita pizza which was tasty. And the final guest had veal Marsala. While the sauce was quite tasty the veal seemed rather tough.
All in all it was a great experience and each of us would defínitely go back again.
Very nice spot for a date. I wouldn't recommend for a first/second date because the piano playing upstairs could make conversation a bit difficult if you're trying to get to know someone, but for an established couple, the ambiance is amazing. I loved the piano playing and wished I had cash to tip him. It had a very authentic feel for an Italian restaurant. Osso Bucco was incredible, cavatappi with veal was good but not amazing. I loved the zapaglione dessert! Will definitely be returning, one of the better restaurants in old town
Very nicely renovated. Terrific bartender/waitress and hostess. Lots of nice dishes on the more streamlined menu. Don’t miss the artichoke appetizer. Osso Bucco was delicious. The Caesar salad could use some improvement. It was a lovely night and dining al fresco on the sidewalk was delightful.
Nice renovation - They have opened up the upstairs for dining so much more room then before. Dinner entrees are wonderful - although they have special cocktails I recommend using the wine list.
I have always recommended this restaurant to my friends. The food here is amazing and authentic. I've not been disappointed by anything I've ordered from the menu. My husband and I would frequent La Trattoria when we were dating and then had our engagement party here. We were nervous when Franco left that it wouldn't be the same, but it is! The atmosphere is still as wonderful as it was when he was walking around serving food and taking orders. Nothing about the dishes that were originally on the menu have changed! I love bringing friends here for the good food and wonderful atmosphere. The location in Old Town is perfect too!
An unexpected disappointing evening at La Trattoria. The summer menu is quite small, our food took an inordinate amount of time to receive, and it was barely warm when it arrived. The new upstairs dining area is quaint, but extremely loud and cramped. We love the staff, but they need to work out the kinks of this recent expansion.
This is an absolute gem of a find. If I lived in Alexandria, this would be my “home away from home.” The atmosphere was great, the staff friendly, and the Italian food spectacular. The veal was outstanding - and also- if you like artichokes, make sure to try the long-stemmed fried artichokes. Wow! Apparently there is an upstairs dining room and also a lounge that are also open on the weekends. Definitely going back to La Trattoria on my next trip to the DC area.
Awesome pizza, will go back for dinner when we are back in town!
My husband and I went on a Thursday with no reservation. We were seated quickly. The service was attentive, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was quaint. We were happy with our experience and happy to find a local new Italian place in Old Town. We live near by and like having new dining options to walk to and this is definitely on our list from now on!
We hadn't been there for several years (when it was Tratoria Da Franco). While the decor has been updated nicely, the service was ok, the food was unremarkable. We tried the "house speciality" captevia (sp) with veal ragu, and it was exceptionally bland and the veal chunks included in the sauce was chewy. The ceaser salads were nice, we liked the garlic toast ... but just can't recommend. The services was ok... so maybe it was an off night.
Some if the dishes we ordered had to be eaten a specific way to be enjoyed optimally, but the waitress failed to tell us that. She also snapped at me when I was trying to ask her a question. The waitress also failed to tell us the special appetizer fed 2 people so we bought 2 and could not finish them. We also told the waitress that we were under time constraints and she dawdled. It was a good thing that the host stepped in multiple times to cover for the deficient waitress.
Had a wonderful time and food was excellent. Loved the piano bar!
The hostess went above and beyond to make our experience wonderful.
Very nice experience as always, we are local/return customers who brought one of our daughters and her BF who were on their way to NY for a job/move. Thoroughly enjoyed it as always.
My husband and I had lunch there and we loved it! The food was tasty, good size menu and portions, the wine he had was good, and the service was great. The atmosphere was authentic and cozy. My only complaint was that we sat at a very small table in the middle of the dining room and there weren't other options, I wasn't very comfortable. It was quite chilly but they were kind to turn the fan off. Overall, great experience and we will be back!
Authentic Italian cuisine! The veal tortillini in cream sauce was absolutely the best italian dish I have ever had. My daughter had the Gnocchi. It was also excellent. Wonderful quaint italian atmosphere. I highly recommend this resteraunt to everyone. You haven't really eaten italian food until you have eaten at La Trattoria!
Absolutely phenomenal dinner! I took my parents here and we all loved the food. The staff knew everything about the menu and their suggestions were spot on. Everything tasted really fresh and homemade. I would definitely come back!
I had a large family group (10 diners) that I wanted to bring to La T. Knowing the restaurant is small and cozy from previous visits, I was expecting that we would be separated into two groups. But, I hadn’t considered that the upstairs renovations had been completed, so, when we arrived, we found our table for 10 was set and waiting for us. I see that they could easily handle a larger party than ours in the new upstairs dining room. As usual, the food and service was outstanding and he piano player set the right mood. Mike and his team of cooks, bartenders and servers really have something special going here. Most of our group were first timers to La T, but now they all know why I speak so highly of the place, and I’m sure they will be back too!
Delicious food, terrific service and lovely atmosphere
Dinner with Live Music by Carlos Ibay was great, food was great.
Food was just ok. The bruschetta had a ton of cheese, and was not authentic Italian in any way. The pizza was just ok. We didn't try their pasta, so we can't rate that. Service was great though.
This was my second time visiting this restaurant in the last 2 months as I do not live in Virginia. The food was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the lasagna which he said was delicious. I ordered a chicken pasta dish in a cream sauce. The sauce was light and flavorful. The bread was served with an oil and pesto mix and was toasted perfectly. My favorite spot now whenever I visit the area.
Went for Mother’s Day brunch, food was great, service was great!
This isn't an Italian restaurant, but something else entirely (and pretending to be Italian). It's like the owners read a Tuscan cookbook once and decided they would try their hand at Italian cooking. What a disaster. Think cafeteria food on Italy day. Even the portions are minuscule. The ambiance isn't much better: Outdated decor like Carnivale masks, the worst examples of tourism posters, and a music mix that would make Frank Sinatra roll over in his grave.
Wonderful food and service. The ambiance was special in this small intimate restaurant.
Outstanding food and service. Vibrant bar.
