Beautifully decorated giving a welcoming and modern feel.
We were warmly greeted and had a large table upstairs. The menu is interesting and varied. There were specials of the day and we tried the frittata( deep fried fish, prawns ) along with some croquettas and squid. We followed these with some very special orange prawns and steak. The food was delicious.
Highly recommend for authentic Spanish food in a lovely setting.
Really enjoyed our first visit , will definitely go again , staff were very friendly and helpful
Unfortunately, whilst the quality of food was very high, the service and ambience of the restaurant are in need of improvement (as of 6th March). Booked in for 7:15, we were ignored for a couple of minutes (seems longer when waiting in a busy restaurant) until finally the maitre d' logged us in and showed us to our table. There was quite delay before our order was taken and after our starters, a very long delay until our mains (fresh whole fish) arrived. During this time, the maitre d' asked us if we wanted any desserts (no - we haven't had our mains yet)! Clearly, there was little or no communication between her and other staff, who after a while noticed we had been waiting a long time. The fish were very good when they arrived (sole & John Dory. We talked about our experience with the other main waiter who admitted the delay but really only concentrated on excuses rather than apologies and possible mitigation - we already paid the bill but only then did he say he would have taken money off... Overall, the place was noisy and crowded with flat, largely empty walls that do not provide any baffle - not a great atmosphere.
Excellent food quality ingredients friendly service highly recommended. Only criticism not enough bread to mop up delicious sauces
Great food. Would highly recommend!
The food was fabulous, fresh and so tasty. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wines they were serving. Lively, great vibe to the place. Why settle for adequate when you can eat at Mercado Centrale?
My wife and I take turns in treating the other to a meal out. I took her to Mercado Central this week and said that she would have a job beating the ambience, décor food and service the next time it was her turn.
She said she couldn't better it but could match it as we are going back next week.
I am looking forward to it.
The food was very taste, the only thing was that the patatas bravas were reheat and they didnt taste good .
The service was good and the place lovely
The food is very good and definitely something new for Cambridge but the atmosphere was incredibly noisy and the food service was extremely slow. This could be excused but trouble is that they orientated themselves at a very high price end for what they do making other, also very good establishments in Cambridge look good value and at this level you just cannot fail in any department. Yes, its is unique food and has novelty right now but £16.50 for three large prawns or £21 for a paella is pushing it in my view, no matter how good it is. And the drinks prices match that level too. Its a shame since otherwise I might be coming back. Will be interesting to see how they are going to cope when the novelty effect wears off.
The food was outstanding, although not cheap, the quality of the food is great! The service was not exceptional but acceptable. It may have been only because it was busy..There were few orders forgotten however these were taken out of the bill at the end and the management handled the situation adequately.
Best meal we have had in Cambridge. Service was amazing, highly recommended
A lively atmosphere, helpful staff, fantastic food and a great wine list - all the things needed for a perfect evening in a restaurant
Very nice meal with pleasant atmosphere
We enjoyed the food and the ambiance of this well-appointed restaurant. We were particularly impressed by the friendly and attentive staff who were clearly enthusiastic about informing their clients of the provenance of the dishes and their preparation.
Buzzy restaurant with great Spanish food, particularly the fish. The dishes are quite light so you can have three courses without feeling stuffed. The decor is pleasant Euro modern and not too noisy early in the evening, but when the large parties arrive on a Saturday evening, it's hard on the ears.
A little warm and alone or two teething issues but in general a lovely addition to the Cambridge eateries scene.
I was so impressed by the food. The two fish specials were absolutely fresh and precisely cooked. And the minimalist seafood paella was equally excellent in the quality of the ingredients and the wonderful crust they managed to achieve on the edges of the cool rectangular paella pan they use. Will certainly be coming back.
Fantastic food, you can feel the passion in the open plan restaurant. Great attention to detail with a Spanish brigade cooking Spanish food, Galecian food is dominant. Only negative is portions are on the small side.
A really lovely restaurant, run by enthusiastic and lovely people. The food was delicious and service was friendly and welcoming. Lovely casual atmosphere with a delightful hub bub.
Watching the chefs prepare the food, laughing and enjoying their craft was a bonus.
Really outstanding experience. Authentic tapas, excellent wine list and really accommodating to us. We are couple who enjoy eating out but we have a small baby.
Quite often we get treated as more of an irritation - not the case here. Warm, welcoming and lovely staff combined with great food and wine.
Will definitely be back - I hope the menu is regularly and seasonally updated.
Visited for casual lunch - would like to go for a big blow out meal as some extremely cool wines and interesting meat centrepiece dishes to try.
Excellent tapas, friendly staff with outstanding Maitre D! The Stand out dish was the Picos de Europa Blue Cheese, Beetroot, Walnuts, Tarragon. A really great meal out in well designed surroundings.
Fantastic food in a great setting. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the service excellent! Highly recommend.
A vibrant new restaurant with an authentic Spanish feel. Excellent food, especially the fresh fish, superb and knowledgeable staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Very welcoming and friendly. Just what Cambridge needs!
we will be back
lovely staff and service
Absolutely my favourite restaurant in Cambridge - great, authentic food, fabulous service, and elegant understated decor. Perfect for tapas, or a lengthier meal with friends. Buenísimo!
My husband and I live locally and we went for lunch. The reception was automatic but not warm. There was no atmosphere in the restaurant and it was sparsely furnished and decorated. The menu was limited and the food made to sound better than it was. ‘Sharing’ plates were single portions and the bread was scarce. We had to order more bread to mop up the garlic oil of the prawns as only one piece of sourdough was served with the ‘sharing’ dish. We also had three other sharing plates - boquerones, tomato toast and octopus. Each plate was what might be expected for one. All the food was very good so no complaints about the quality of the food. However the biggest problem was the price! These were London prices at least. Main courses were £20 to £30 and some £89 (steak for 2). A plate of jamon was £19. The 4 plates we had plus 3 glasses of wine were £72! And we left wanting more food. We went up the street for coffee and cheese at another Spanish restaurant! This restaurant won’t last 6 months in Cambridge, a city full of students and tourists. Very disappointing visit as we love Spanish food and wine. But we will not be back, nor would I recommend it - mainly because of the poor value for money and sterile atmosphere.
Great food, great service. Traditional Spanish dishes, prepared near perfectly. Upstairs has my preference re seating, as the kitchen is downstairs.
Three of us made our first visit to Mercado Central. The setting and ambience is good. You could easily imagine you were in a tapas bar in Spain. We had cecina de Leon, tortilla, smoked tuna, anchovies and boquerones to start. All were excellent, particularly the cecina and smoked tuna. This was followed by octopus and squid. The octopus was fabulous. We then had the cod and fantastic pork iberico as recommended to us as they had run out of the cutlets. Washed down with beer and a lovely Izadi crianza, finished with cheese, ice cream and some delicious Pedro Jimenez sherry. Everyone thought they food was outstanding and would return any time. It isn’t cheap, but they only use the best quality ingredients and it is expertly cooked and presented. So cheap no, but definitely worth the money!
Mercado Central recently opened in the Cambridge City Centre. The small plates are excellent and the sangria is a must. Highly recommended
Food and service was superb. I just wish the seafood paella’s portion was more generous! We had a bottle of wine for £36 but it didn’t taste it it was worth it. I had wine similar price to that in other Spanish restaurant and that tasted like what it was worth.
Absolutely fabulous food, wonderful service and lovely ambiance. High quality cuisine in a delightful atmosphere. A true treat.
Fantastic food and wine. A lovely venue. A very friendly and welcoming team. Thank you
Excellent Spanish food using the highest quality, and carefully sourced ingredients. Good service, lovely decor. Filled a gap in Cambridge that was Lon overdue. Hoorah! Go now I can’t recommend enough.
The service was warm and friendly from the moment we walked in the door. The food was absolutely delicious and the only dish that arrived a little later than the others was a portion of broccoli. The dining rooms and facilities are beautifully decorated and the restaurant is in a great central Cambridge location. We will certainly return to this restaurant in the future.
Great new addition to the Cambridge restaurant scene and delighted that it’s not part of a chain. Amazing Spanish food and outstanding service. Already recommended to friends.
Great food and wine - the Iberian pork is exceptional.
Friendly and attentive service
Highly recommend visiting Mercado Central, I’ve been twice since it opened its doors, on both occasions the staff have been professional, knowledgable and friendly. The food and service is excellent. Brilliant wine list and drinks menu. I’ll definitely be returning again and again...
We booked on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed:-) Delicious food, nice busy atmosphere, a very welcoming host (the owner), and attentive service. The portion sizes are relatively small (as you'd expect for tapas) so we had to order extra bread to keep teenage sons happy! But a lovely addition to the Cambridge restaurant scene.
Very attentive service, freshness of food unquestionable, delightful experience all round. Thank you!
Food was good, but just way too expensive! Paid £64 for just some average tapas and 2 glasses of wine!
