The sushi is phenomenal. We came for the happy hour which is amazing but we couldn't wait for the bar. Highly recommend!!
My wife and I had a wonderful time at Sakerum last weekend! It was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised by the warm, cozy ambiance and very comfortable round booths. The service was excellent, the bartender was pulling double duty as a server but never missed a beat. The sushi and bao buns were delicious, we can't wait to come back!
My boyfriend took me to Sakerum for a belated Valentine’s dinner. Our reservation was for 915pm (only availability, which is understandable since it was a Friday and the day after valentine’s day), and we got there right on time, but our table wasn’t ready yet, so we were asked to wait at the bar. The manager gave us a drink each on the house because of the unready table, which was very considerate. We got the Godzilla drink made with sake, mint, and cucumber; so fresh and yummy. When we were brought to our table, we noticed how beautiful the rooftopis. So many unique decor pieces, a modern Asian flair to add to our sushi experience. Our server seated us at a cozy table in the middle of the room, but didn’t give us menus for 17 minutes.. until my boyfriend flagged her down and told her we were without menus. She was very sweet and apologetic, but it wouldn’t be the last time she forgot something of ours in the same night. We ended up sharing bluefin nigiri, the sake roll, the haturo roll, and bowls of miso soup. The nigiri was super fatty and fresh, amazing. The miso was great too! The rolls were average, unsure why people were raving about them; too much tempura that overwhelmed the flavor of the actual fish and shrimp. Anyway, our server never brought out the sake roll with our order; I told her we were missing the roll before she brought it out. She seemed like she didn’t remember I had ordered it. Again, she was sweet and apologetic, but for being 1015pm at this point, we couldn’t just shrug the mediocre service off. She gave us a round of sake shots to makeup for it. The sake was high quality and smooth, we appreciated trying a new type because of a mishap. Our experience was still fun, and we tipped our server well because she wasn’t rude at all even though we had expressed our frustrations towards her. I’d recommend Sakerum for happy hour rather than dinner.
Great vibes for a weekend but the service was very slow.
Service was good. The food was tray subpar. If you are looking for somewhat decent sushi. Look elsewhere.
The food was the selling point here, amazing, all of the fresh fish in the various sushi/sashini/nigiri were some of the best in DC, and we eat a lot of it here. Perhaps just a short way behind our favorite, Sushi Taro. The service was the only low point, perhaps there were kitchen issues but food took quite a while and wasn't greatly timed. For example, our gyoza we ordered with our drinks came 10-15 mins after our drinks arrived, and only a few minutes before our sushi, which we ordered after receiving our drinks. But they were attentive and we chatted with the manager who walked by. They also took back and didn't charge us for a small bottle of sparkling sake that we really didn't like, which I found to be very generous of them to do. Overall great food and good date-night!
While this restaurant certainly has some delicious and tasty courses, they have not yet sorted out their service challenges, especially around tasting menus. We went on Valentine's Day and each ordered one of their 3 tasting menus. The two we ordered had 8 different courses, and one included dessert. I asked if it was possible to make a substitution on one of the courses on my menu, as it featured something I couldn't eat, but everything else was fine; I was assured that wouldn't be a problem. Forty minutes later, our first course showed up, and after that, everything went haywire. The pacing for bringing out the courses was a bit strange, and my partner and I quickly wound up out of sync. After 6 courses for my partner and 5 for me, the waitress announced that we were done, and asked if we wanted dessert. We pointed out that we hadn't yet received some of the items on our tasting menus, including the one that *included* dessert. She returned to the kitchen and eventually brought out one more dish apiece, and announced again that we were done. We were in rush for a play and had already been there for 2 hours, so we gave up and paid. They did wind up charging us for the lower cost of one of the tasting menus as a concession, I imagine. While the food was all delicious, our nice dinner out wound up being a very stressful one on account of the service, so I wound not recommend.
Waited a little while for a booth, which was absolutely worth it. The ambiance of Sakerum is truly what makes the experience. The food is delicious and fresh, the staff is helpful, and with the roll out of the weeknight happy hour crowd, the dimly lit, expertly architected corridor of the restaurant comes alive.
The service was painfully slow. For the price of the food, the service should have been excellent. The octopus same out super cold and did not taste good and the service was so very slow. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Great place great food okay service
Restaurant is enjoyable, nice hidden gem on the north end of the 14th street craziness
Came in tonight for dinner and leaving with an overall great experience from the restaurant but probably won't be coming back because of how horribly other guests acted. Seated upstairs next to a group that kept complaining about not being able to move tables together, they kept blocking the walking area between tables, and kept talking trash about the manager and the servers for not letting them move tables. Something to do with happy hour. Positive notes. Our server was excellent, he was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. The manager came over and checked on us and was very gracious and friendly. The food was excellent and the drinks were good. The ambience sucked. Like really sucked. Might go back here when there isn't a happy hour going on and people aren't acting like trash. Might want to re-think how you place large groups also.
Great place for sushi! Actually one of my favorites. Try the Slap Roll, its amazing.
The atmosphere is really beautiful and fun upstairs but the sushi is definitely overpriced. We waited at least an hour for our food to come and we didn't order that much which was frustrating. There were not servers upstairs for the amount of people who were there.
Came Saturday for Girls night after reading about it in the Washington city paper article and checking the reviews. This place was slammed. Vibe was great, sushi was incredible. Had the Hotaru roll which was the weekend special, possibly the best sushi roll of my life.
Great things: General Manager is quite charming, edgy and hot. 😍. Sushi is incredible and delicious. Server was sweet and cute.
Good things: ambience was nice, had a DJ upstairs
Weird things: GM asked us for the table back at the end of the night (we had been sitting for a while) explained that they were overbooked on reservations and offered to buy us a round at the bar which was cool.
Seems to be only one manager which is weird for a place this size.
Bad things: It was really hard to leave our table, there was a party upstairs that pretty much blocked the entire path out of the tables, didn’t really move when we asked them too either so had to shove our way out.
Overall awesome experience. Can’t wait to come back
It was my first time dining at Sakerum so I was looking forward to my dinner. The food was excellent especially the tuna poké bowl, Kazan and the haikkaido rolls. The restaurant design is beautiful and elegant. It is a fun place for people watching and for bringing a guest.
The only blot on the night was that we felt quite rushed to vacate our table. We ordered 3 rounds of drinks; numerous dishes and dessert so had a pretty good tab before tip. I felt like the servers were hovering as we were eating dessert and finishing our last cocktails. After I had just finished signing the check and my guest still had half of their drink to finish, a manager type came over, cleared our dishes and asked us to leave our table. He apologized for asking saying “they had people waiting.”
I’ve never had any restaurant ask me to leave a table before so was shocked. Yes, it was a Saturday night and they were starting to get busy but it’s bad planning and time management to not space reservations well. I worked in restaurants for many years as both a server and a host so really do understand the pressures that restaurant employees endure.
I may go back on a week night to eat at the bar because the food was good but I probably won’t bring another guest or clients because I was pretty taken aback by the lack of hospitality experienced at the end of the meal.
Love this restaurant! Quickly became a DC fave! The cocktails are amazing and the food is super yummy and you can tell it’s great quality. The manager was super helpful and attentive and the staff were very friendly and professional. Can’t wait to go back!
Good food. Weird service
Wonderful meal and drinks! We felt pampered!
Overall, we very much enjoyed our meal at Sakerum. The only problem was the loud pop music, which fit neither the cuisine nor the atmosphere. The food was great, however, albeit a bit expensive. The service was also wonderful and the food came quickly.
Half of menu is great. Half isn’t. GM is kind; were out of a wine btl or two.
I love this place!!! Sushi is amazing. Service was excellent. It is kinda of expensive. Manager is hot lol, like the other reviews said. My new favorite Sushi place. 10/10 would recommend.
Service was slow and inattentive
Delicious food, moderately priced. Ordered edamame for appetizer that took more than 30 minutes to arrive. We were starved!
They were out of every drink (3 different drinks) that my boyfriend tried to order. The sushi was subpar. I had been talking the place up to him as I’ve always had an outstanding meal, but the sushi truly was not good that night. The guacamole and brussels were very good however.
Went for all night happy hour. Was a little confused at first about where happy hour was located but ended being sat up on the rooftop which was beautiful, really love the ambience. Food was spectacular, though when we got some rolls off the regular menu were quite pricy. (still worth it) Had a drink, "Yu can't handle the Zu" which was delicious. Server was friendly and personable. Manager was super friendly and enjoyed our conversation with him. (I think this is the one in reviews who looks like Christian Grey, though I don't really see it. Still really handsome though) Overall a great time and great food, though I would consider adjusting some prices.
Amazing happy hour on Wednesdays! This was my 2nd time here and I had Jess as my server who was so sweet and kind and a great server! The food is high quality and cheap with the $5 specials. My 2 friends and I stayed for 5 hours and drank 5 glasses of wine and all split multiple sushi rolls, Elotes, fried shishito peppers, edamame and more and it was only $45 each- AMAZING deal. Hard to find such a good deal with high quality food- recommend! Ambiance is great too- it's busy but not too loud at all.
Sakerum has been a favorite since the first time I went. The food is delicious and perfect for sharing, and the cocktails are amazing with unique flavors! Always recommend!
Good sushi rolls and cocktails, which is what we were after. Pricey but fine for a special occasion, which this was.
Was looking for a new sushi spot to go to. Saw the opentable review where the manager apparently looks like Mr.Grey and Hugh Jackman lol. It was a toss up between here and Sushi Taro. So we came here. Food is amazing: like the sushi is soooooooo good. Service is good, super friendly and attentive. Manager doesn't look like Hugh Jackman. He does look like Christian Grey though lol. Make sure you get a wardrobe allowance!! Anyway, it was a great experience. Will come back for sure.
Small portions. Sushi was fine. Cool space though.
Awesome all around!
The hip arrangement of bid cage light fixtures are covered in visible dust.
Dining room was not full but service was slow My cocktail refill arrived after my meal was finished. Sushi and steamed buns were good to great. Pacific Umi was tasteless and mushy. They did remove the umi from the bill without asking so that’s nice
In the end more of a young and hip sushi place that does not pay attention to details I would not recommend
Great food and atmosphere. Reservations were misleading because you cannot get the happy hour specials unless you are a table of four or less. I chose this location for a group of six and out my credit card down etc for happy hour but in the moment they were less than accommodating and did not allow us to get the specials. Prices are high without the happy hour deals, coming from someone who has been to many dc restaurants and is always looking for a good new find! Will give it a second shot for sure but think management could have been more customer focused.
Girlfriend and I tried out Sakerum for the first time after some friends recommended it. Our server was super friendly and really attentive even though sometimes she had to repeat herself. It was really loud and made it a little hard to hear her. Sushi was amazing, like amazing. It took about 25 minutes to come out, but it wasn’t a big deal. Drinks were good, had one with apricot in it that was tasty but not too sweet. Ambience is nice, though it went from like a super cool house mix to pit bull screaming lol. Also not one to comment on manager appearances ever, but the one who stopped by our table was like a mix of Hugh Jackman and Mr. Grey and was dressed like he modeled suits for a living 😍. + .5 ambience. Definitely going to be back!
We sat upstairs and did a mix of happy hour/full dining dishes. The service was honestly pretty sub par (we waited 20-25 minutes before we got our drinks and also a significant amount of time in between rounds, had to request soy sauce three times before it was brought over, and our water glasses were not filled promptly). The specialty roll was great, but the sushi we ordered off the happy hour list tasted pretty fishy. Atmosphere was superb, but overall just a fair experience based on the food and service we received.
Food and ambiance is always great! We love coming here for happy hour and sushi.
Our service was incredible. I think our bartender/waiter’s name was Shu. The check said Cho. Holy hell, what a phenomenal guy, let alone server. His attitude was incredibly positive and he was more excited than us every time a dish came out for service. His enthusiasm and charm elevated out experience 10 fold. We will definitely ask for him next time and there will absolutely be a next time.
Went for a birthday dinner...we sat at a booth near the entrance, wasn't too distracting. Menu had a lot of choices.
