Shou Sumiyaki was a lovely place for dinner. We enjoyed choosing the wagyu and grilling it over charcoal at the table. The meat was tender and flavourful, and the whole experience felt relaxed and enjoyable. The staff were welcoming, helped us with the menu and made sure we had everything we needed. We’d happily visit again.

We had a wonderful dinner at Shou Sumiyaki. The wagyu was beautifully marbled, tender and full of flavour, and grilling it over the charcoal at our table made the meal feel special. Everything arrived well presented, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout. They explained the menu clearly and checked in at the right times without interrupting our meal. The restaurant had a warm, comfortable atmosphere that made it easy to relax and enjoy the evening. It’s a great place to go with friends or for a special dinner. We left very happy and would definitely return for the wagyu and the overall experience.

A really enjoyable dinner at Shou Sumiyaki. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and were happy to explain the menu and offer guidance. Our food arrived promptly and was delicious, especially the wagyu from the charcoal grill. We never felt rushed, which made the evening even better. Thank you to the team for looking after us.

Long wait to get table even though we had a booking, more than 30 minutes, no explanation, staff not organised and very poor English, one person, possibly owner was doing everything, taking orders took ages water came almost an hour after arrival.

The food itself was enjoyable, particularly the meat, which was well prepared and tasty. That said, the overall value felt a little average – slightly more meat would have gone a long way. The side dishes were the weakest part for us; fewer leafy salads and more Japanese-style sides or entrées (such as gyoza) would have better complemented the meal. Unfortunately, the service was very disappointing. Although the restaurant was not overly busy, everything was extremely slow. We had a 6:00 pm booking and, despite letting the restaurant know we would be running about five minutes late, we still waited almost 20 minutes for our table on arrival. From there, drinks took a long time, food took a long time, and even at the end of the meal we waited a further 10 minutes just to settle the bill. Overall, the experience was okay – good food but let down by poor service and average value.

スタッフの皆さんがとても親切で、居心地がとても良くいつまでもここに居たい心境でした。偶然、日本人のスタッフの方もいてメルボルンでの過ごし方など丁寧にお話してくださり、とても参考になりました。日本が少し恋しいタイミングでしたので、とても元気がもらえました。美味しい和牛の焼肉が食べたくなったら是非お勧めします。美味しいお料理をありがとうございました。

An unforgettable dining experience at Shou Sumiyaki! The premium Japanese BBQ is outstanding — high-quality cuts of meat, fresh ingredients, and cooked to perfection over charcoal. The staff are incredibly friendly, attentive, and make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive. The atmosphere is warm, elegant, and perfect for both special occasions and casual nights out. It’s always nice when a restaurant you enjoyed before lives up to the memory on your next visit. Returning to Shou Sumiyaki, I was once again impressed by the quality of the food and the welcoming atmosphere. 🔥 The premium Wagyu BBQ was just as tender and flavourful as I remembered — rich marbling that melts perfectly over the charcoal grill. The yakitori skewers were spot on too, smoky with that perfect balance of seasoning. 🥢 Service remained attentive without being intrusive, and the team made sure everything from grill prep to drink refills flowed smoothly. 🍶 This time, I also tried their Japanese whisky — a smooth pairing with the yakiniku that really elevated the whole experience. Overall, Shou Sumiyaki has proven itself consistent, reliable, and still one of the best spots in town if you’re after a proper Japanese BBQ experience. Definitely worth revisiting (and revisiting again!).

I recently celebrated my birthday at Shou Sumiyaki, and it was nothing short of amazing. From start to finish, the experience was flawless. The restaurant has a warm, inviting ambiance with a modern yet cozy Japanese-inspired interior that made our group feel comfortable and relaxed. The highlight was definitely the food. We ordered the all u can eat Wagyu tasting set, featuring wagyu beef that was tender, juicy, and expertly grilled right at our table. The sumiyaki skewers, including chicken, beef, and vegetables, were perfectly seasoned and grilled to perfection, offering a fantastic variety of flavors. The side dishes complemented the meal beautifully — the fresh salads, miso soup, and rice were all excellent. What really stood out was the exceptional service. The staff were attentive, friendly, and went out of their way to make my birthday special, even bringing out a small dessert with a candle to celebrate. Their knowledge of the menu helped us pick the best dishes and drinks, including some great sake and Japanese beer options. The atmosphere was lively but intimate, making it perfect for both groups and couples. We enjoyed some great conversations and laughter throughout the night. If you’re thinking about celebrating a special occasion, Shou Sumiyaki offers a fantastic combination of delicious food, great drinks, and welcoming service. Highly recommend booking ahead, especially for larger groups or celebrations!
